“Hey, Ms. Krystal,” Tokyo said into the phone, finally answering after the lady had called her five times already.

“Hey, sweetie,” Krystal said. “You done ignoring my calls?” she asked with a light giggle.

Tokyo forced a giggle. “Sorry… I just… I just been going through some things, that’s all. Wasn’t really in the mood to talk.”

Especially not to you, Tokyo thought.

“I know. I wanted to check up on you, so I hope you don’t think I’m calling to talk you into forgiving my son, because I’m not,” Krystal honestly told her.

She really did care about Tokyo and wanted to make sure she was okay, while at the same time, giving her a little bit of motherly advice she knew Tokyo’s own mother hadn’t given her. On top of that, Krystal knew very well what it was like dealing with her unorthodox son. She knew it could be emotionally damaging and draining, too.

“I’m okay,” Tokyo lied.

She wasn’t okay. After leaving Haram’s house, Tokyo went to Legacy’s until it was time to pick Space up. She was in such a mental fog that she couldn’t even recall leaving to pick Space up, let alone driving the thirty minutes back to the hotel. Apparently, she had rescheduled the property viewing, but she couldn’t recall the way the conversation went. She didn’t even know when she’d rescheduled the viewing, too. Tokyo was on autopilot.

Everything she did was done with little to no emotion. She smiled and talked with Space but she wasn’t actually there and Space sensed it, too. Instead of being her usual, hyper, talkative self, she just gave Tokyo her space, even if that meant spending the majority of her time in the living room, on the iPad, alone. This was nothing new. Space had witnessed Tokyo at her worst. At least this time, Tokyo wasn’t crying all day, forgetting to feed her or pick her up.

“Oh, sweetheart,” Krystal said after sucking her teeth. “No, you’re not. I can hear it all in your voice.”

Tokyo took a deep breath and turned on her side, regretting her decision to finally answer Krystal’s call. “Yeah…”

“Don’t you let this thing with my son break your spirit, Tokyo. You’re a very, very sweet girl with such a bright light that—”

“I wish people would stop saying that about me,” Tokyo interrupted. “I’m not a very, very sweet girl. I don’t have a bright light. This bright light everyone thinks I have isn’t real. I’m tired, Ms. Krystal. I’ve been tired. I’m tired of faking like I’m okay. I’m tired of pretending like… like… I like being strong. I hate this… I hate this so much.” Tokyo paused to catch her breath as she began to sob uncontrollably. “I just… I just want to be happy for once in my fucking life! Every time! Every time I’m happy, something horrible happens! What did I do to deserve this!? I didn’t… I didn’t do anything! Why does life have to be so hard for me?! I’m only nineteen, Ms. Krystal! I’m… I’m fucking tired, man!”

Tokyo had reached her breaking point.
